The Devil Wears Prada 2 premieres in Korea on April 29, and the timing feels oddly perfect.

The original wasn't just a workplace comedy. Beneath the one-liners and iconic closet scenes, it made a genuinely interesting case for why fashion matters — how what we wear says something before we open our mouths, and how dressing for an occasion is, in its own way, a kind of social fluency. Miranda Priestly's cerulean speech wasn't really about a color. It was about the invisible chain of signals and norms that shape how we show up — and how others receive us.

That makes it a good moment to talk about the two dress codes for the 1st Texas Global Alumni Summit.

I was curious about this myself, so I decided to look into it and share it with you. 😂

What a dress code actually means

At its core, a dress code is a shared agreement — a way of saying I know what this moment calls for.

  • Cocktail attire for the Gala Dinner says: this evening matters, and I'm here for it.
  • Business casual for the conference sessions says: I'm here to engage and connect — polished, but human about it.

Neither one is about impressing anyone. They're about showing up in a way that feels right for the room.

Gala Dinner — Cocktail Attire

Think of it as an evening of celebration—a moment to reach for something you enjoy wearing.

Cocktail attire can be interpreted with some flexibility depending on the nature of the event, the season, and the venue, but a few core principles generally apply (Vogue).

Women:

  • Cocktail dresses can range from above-the-knee to midi length; for a more classic look, knee-length to tea-length is a safe choice.
  • Avoid overly voluminous silhouettes, such as ball gowns (Vogue).
  • Formal trouser suits or coordinated sets are also appropriate.
  • Fabrics such as satin, chiffon, crepe, and velvet work well.
  • Heels, pointed-toe flats, or strappy sandals are all suitable options. For indoor events, dress shoes are a safe choice, while for outdoor settings, polished flats without heels may also be considered (Vogue).
  • For spring or summer events, floral patterns can work, but it’s best to consider the overall tone of the event and the host’s intent (Vogue).

Men:

  • A dark suit in navy, charcoal, or black paired with a dress shirt.
  • A tie is a safe choice for an international evening event, though it may be omitted if the overall look remains polished. A collared shirt or tie is not strictly required—tops with subtle color or pattern can also work well (Vogue).
  • Footwear such as loafers or formal boots is appropriate (Vogue).

While cocktail attire may feel a bit nuanced, the guiding principle is simple: aim to dress slightly more formally than usual (Vogue).

Plenary Sessions — Business Casual

A balance of ease and polish—comfortable enough to carry conversations throughout the day, while remaining put-together.

Women:

  • Tailored trousers with a blouse or structured top, blazers, sheath dresses, or midi skirts—styles that combine professionalism with comfort.
  • Button-down shirts, blouses, polo shirts, or sweaters with a clean neckline are all appropriate. Layering a jacket or cardigan over a sleeveless top is also a neat option (Indeed).
  • Footwear such as loafers or pumps—closed-toe shoes with or without heels—pairs well (Indeed).
  • Coordinating the color of your belt with your skirt or pants and shoes can create a more cohesive look (Indeed).

Men:

  • Chinos or slacks paired with a shirt or polo.
  • Adding a blazer can help maintain a polished and natural impression as you move between sessions and meet different people.
  • Dress socks with loafers, dress shoes, or other formal leather footwear are all appropriate choices (Indeed).
  • Matching your belt with your trousers and shoes helps complete the look (Indeed).

If you’d like to add a personal touch, consider accessories such as a watch, scarf, or minimal jewelry. A coat or a structured bag can also complement a business casual outfit (Indeed).

Today, the line between workwear and everyday clothing has become increasingly fluid. Even so, for a large in-person gathering like this, a dress code still carries meaning. It functions less as a set of rules and more as a shared social language—one that helps shape the space when professionals from different fields, generations, and cultural backgrounds come together.

Take the opportunity to bring out something you genuinely enjoy wearing.
